HAVE YOUR SAY This refers to “1 dead, 12 hurt in chemical plant blast“ carried in Chandigarh Tribune of July 11. It’s shocking to know about a massive fire which broke out at a chemical factory in Dera Bassi on Wednesday, causing death of two of its employees and serious injury to 12 workers. Such industrial units should install highest quality of fire protection systems, including digital alarm systems, sprinklers, extinguishers of various types, own fire tenders and above all, well-designed and equipped fire hydrant systems having all standby arrangements. Now, the investigating agencies probing the reasons of the fire should check if all the above provisions were made by the management of this unit. Also, it should be investigated that whether this industry was adopting a procedure of routine safety audits and if the unit had employed requisite number of well qualified safety officers on their roll. SANJAY CHOPRA Cleaning of road gullies Even as people heaved a sigh relief during the first rain last week in the tricity, which was a pre-monsoon shower, it also brought up the issue of waterlogged in the streets and power supply also remained affected. It showed that even a brief spell of rain could result in waterlogging in some parts of the city because of choked road gullies. In a few cases, water entered houses. This all happens because of poor planning and evasiveness to take timely action by the authorities concerned. There are about 30,000 road gullies, which should have been cleaned well before the monsoon. SK Khosla Problems that plague tricity Streetlights can be seen switched on in Industrial Area Phase 1 and Phase 2 during the day. The Engineering Department of the UT is least bothered about saving water and electricity. Electric poles are also calling for repairs and maintenance. No precautionary measures have been taken to check open connections, kundis and joints in wires. It can lead to a serious disaster and electrocution in the rainy season. Most of the streetlights are not working and have not been repaired since months. Crime is also increasing in Industrial Area Phase 1 & 2. Dark streets invite crime. It is often seen that it takes several days to repair water leakage, roads and streetlights in Chandigarh. Sweepers are not doing their job regularly. Despite of several calls on MC helpline, no action has been taken to clear wild bushes and clean gullies and manholes. The objective of Smart City cannot be achieved with this type of attitude. Deepak Arora A toilet block was constructed separately for gents, ladies and disabled at the Phase-9 nature park before the general elections. However, the toilet block has been locked and visitors to the park are denied the facility created for them. The Mohali MC is requested to remove the locks and make the toilet facility available for the public at the earliest without waiting for formal inauguration. Col TBS Bedi (retd) Poor facilities in library It’s very hard to study in Sector 42 library. The air-conditioning system is not adequate. Our exams are approaching and our studies are suffering due to this. A lot of students study on the floor due to lack of seating arrangement. The administration is not paying any attention to this.
