Students’ fate hangs by thread

Meanwhile, the Fire Department has submitted a list of more than 300 erring coaching centres to the SDMs concerned for taking further action. Several coaching centres in Sector 15, 22, 23, 24 and 17 have been given the notices. Two medical coaching institutes in Sector 24 have already been shut. The SDM orders also directed the institute owners to refund the students’ fee or to arrange classes for them at alternative venue.

SEALING ORDERS FOR COACHING CENTRES Ramkrishan Upadhyay Tribune news service Chandigarh, July 18 With the orders of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Centre) Nazuk Kumar to seal more than 60 coaching centres, the fate of thousands of students is in jeopardy. While a majority of the coaching centres, which have been served the notice, have approached the Fire Department for seeking an NOC, several of them may still be sealed. Meanwhile, the Fire Department has submitted a list of more than 300 erring coaching centres to the SDMs concerned for taking further action. Nazuk Kumar had yesterday issued the sealing order under Section 133 of the CrPC against the owners of the institutes which failed to comply with the fire safety norms. He directed the Enforcement Department to start the sealing proceedings with immediate effect. Sources said while the Enforcement Department was likely to start the sealing process in a day or two, the orders have created panic among students. Several coaching centres in Sector 15, 22, 23, 24 and 17 have been given the notices. Two medical coaching institutes in Sector 24 have already been shut. Bharat Bhushan Gupta of an institute in Sector 17 said he had already complied with the orders and applied for an NOC from the Fire Department. A manager of another institute also said they had applied for the NOC. Bharat Kumar from Career Launcher said they have complied with the norms. Narinder Singh of Bansal Academy in Sector 16 said he did not have any knowledge about such a notice, but they had already applied for an NOC. The checking of city institutes was carried out in the wake of Surat tragedy wherein 22 students were killed and several others injured. The SDM orders also directed the institute owners to refund the students’ fee or to arrange classes for them at alternative venue. A student from a centre in Sector 24 said though the decision of the Fire Department to seal the erring centres was good, but some alternative arrangement should be made for students.
