Cancer research centreThe VC said a proposal for setting up a cancer research institute named as Atal Advanced Research Institute for Cancer (AARIC) has been sent to the Centre.

Chandigarh, July 18 While addressing the media today, Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar said for the funding of research projects, nine departments have submitted proposals worth Rs 49.59 crore to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for improving the S&T Infrastructure (FIST). Proposals worth Rs 74.11 crore have been submitted to the GOI Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) programme. Talking about the institutional ranking, the VC said the PU was ranked IX in the Atal Ranking of Institutions and Innovation Achviements (ARIIA) and was the only university to have been ranked in top 10. “In NIRF ranking-2019, the university bagged the 21st position and University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences was ranked second among pharmacy institutions in the country,” he said. For the benefit of the students and to increase the revenue, he said lateral entry to engineering courses and migration in the second year from other institutes has been started, for which, an entrance test would be conducted every year. “An effort has been made to fill the maximum numbers of seats reserved for NRI candidates.” Raj Kumar said efforts were being made to bring economy and efficiency in the day-to-day functioning of the university. He said importance is being given to e-governance, e-communication, e-processing, reducing usage of paper and automation in teaching and non-teaching sections. Besides, for regular appraisal and monitoring of various teaching departments and administrative offices, the VC confirmed that a file-tracking system has been started and is being monitored at regular intervals. Innovation council Various centres involved in entrepreneurial and incubation activities have been brought under one roof, said the VC. “Institution Innovation Council (IIC) has been set up to meet the much requirement of the industry and to foster a culture of design and innovation culture among students and faculty. BioNEST is currently hosting 15 incubatees/startups. These incubatees are funded through the Centre and from corporates. 50 industry-ready products are available and many more industry-ready prototypes exist. For showcasing them, a ‘Deliverable Gallery’ will be set up. Other Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) institutions can also join the initiative,” he said. Advanced Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre has also been set up. Already existing SAIF lab has started working from 8 am to 11 pm and will function 24x7 soon . About 77 faculty members have been promoted under CAS in the past one year. “Along with the regular faculty development programmes conducted by Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), four new courses funded by RUSA and two funded by CALEM were conducted,” he said. Cancer research centre The VC said a proposal for setting up a cancer research institute named as Atal Advanced Research Institute for Cancer (AARIC) has been sent to the Centre. The proposal has a financial outlay of Rs 295 crore. Collaborations The PU signed an MoU with Nottingham Trent University; Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN); Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru; GOI Institute of Vedic & Astrological Sciences; Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee; and Esteem Industries, Baddi, HP.
