Gory tale: 1 murder in 1966, 3 a year later, average 20 now

Four killings took place in 1968 and seven in 1969, reveals the crime data of the city. As many as 17 murders were reported in 2018, 25 in 2017, 26 in 2016 and 20 in 2015. The period between 1966 and 1975 saw 61 murders. More crime heads have been added to the city crime report since early 60s or 70s. In 1966, only six accidents were reported, which gradually rose to 293 cases until last year.

The statistics scaled up gradually with 196 killings reported during the period from 1996 to 2005 and 278 from 2006 to 2018. Two sisters from Fazilka were murdered at their rented accommodation in Sector 22 here last week. Till the 90s, crimes that rocked the city were dacoity, robbery, burglary and riots. More crime heads have been added to the city crime report since early 60s or 70s. These include counterfeiting, arson and culpable homicide not amounting to murder. It was only in 2012 that crime against women started showing up in the city criminal records more prominently. From only 27 rapes in 2012, the graph rose to 80 rapes in 2018. Various other crimes like sexual harassment (Section 509 of the IPC), cruelty by husband and relatives (Section 498-A), dowry deaths (Section 304-B), and molestation and obscene act (Section 354, 294) also started figuring in the city crime file since 2012. With number of vehicles plying in the city seeing a high, the mishap count has also gone up. In 1966, only six accidents were reported, which gradually rose to 293 cases until last year. Crimes under the Narcotic, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, did exist in 1966. The period between 2006 and 2018 saw 1,884 cases being registered under the NDPS Act in the city, which is more than double the cases reported between 1966 and 1975 (525 cases). “There was no crime some 40 years ago except for family enmities. These days, the crime picture of the city has changed as we get to hear of rapes and murders quite often,” said Capt Kanwar Devinder Singh (retd), 78.
