No ‘right’ candidate for 16 asst prof posts at PGI

Chandigarh, August 24 The PGIMER, a premier medical research institute, has failed to find suitable candidates for 16 posts of assistant professor in various departments. According to information, the institute had invited applications in January this year with subsequent corrigendum and addendum later that month and in May for recruitment to various posts of faculty. The Standing Selection Committee of the institute conducted interviews for these posts in three phases — Phase I (March 18 to 23), phase II (May 20-25) and phase III (June 14-18 and June 24-25). The recommendations made by the committee were placed before the HR sub-committee of the Governing Body of the institute on August 6. Of the total 119 posts of assistant professor advertised by the institute, 103 were filled. The Department of Anaesthesia got 11 assistant professors, the maximum of the total posts sanctioned to any department. The second highest seven posts each were sanctioned for the radiodiagnoisis and internal medicine departments. However, the Department of Renal Transplant Surgery failed to fill the three sanctioned posts. Similarly, the Department of Haematology failed to get suitable candidates for two posts out of the four sanctioned positions. The departments of general surgery, hepatology, internal medicine, nephrology, paediatrics, plastic surgery, psychiatry clinical psychology (non-medical), pulmonary medicine, radiodiagnosis and transfusion medicine did not find a candidate suitable for one post each. Seven posts reserved for OBC category and three for SC candidates remained vacant. Also, the institute did not find suitable candidates on six unreserved posts. Three posts were sanctioned for the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, but only two of these could be filled. Similarly, the Department of General Surgery got four posts sanctioned, but could fill only three posts. The Department of Internal Medicine got seven posts, but one post remained vacant. Similarly, the Department of Nephrology got five posts, but failed to find suitable candidate on one post. PGI Director Dr Jagat Ram said the posts remained vacant as the candidates could not meet the standards of the institute. These vacant posts would be filled the next time, he said, adding that out of the total selected candidates, 88 had already joined the institute and the remaining had sought some time for joining.
