Over 18K street lights to turn smart in Panchkula

Under the programme, the EESL will replace the conventional street lights with LEDs at its own costs. MC Commissioner Rajesh Jogpal, said, “There are around 18,500 conventional street lights in the city which will be replaced with LEDs. Electricity bills to the tune of Rs 3.93 crore were paid during the same period.

Under the programme, the EESL will replace the conventional street lights with LEDs at its own costs. These smart lights would be connected through a web-based monitoring system thus enabling remote operations and additional operational savings. MC Commissioner Rajesh Jogpal, said, “There are around 18,500 conventional street lights in the city which will be replaced with LEDs. These lights will save a lot of money as they are energy efficient. It will cut electricity bills by 20-30 per cent. Every month the MC spends around Rs 25 lakh on the electricity bills. A similar project is running successfully in Chandigarh.” Jogpal said they have entered into a seven-year contract with the EESL. Over a period, the company will be repaid through consequent reduction in energy and maintenance cost of the municipality. In financial year 2017-18, Rs 86.52 lakh was paid to regular staff and contractual employees of the electricity wing of the MC, while Rs 147.07 lakh expenditure was incurred on maintenance of electrical items. Electricity bills to the tune of Rs 3.93 crore were paid during the same period.
