Players’ association accuses cricket body of ignoring rules Deepankar Sharda Chandigarh, September 20 The first election to elect the office-bearers of the UT Cricket Association (UTCA), recently recognised by the Indian cricket board (BCCI), will be held tomorrow under a cloud of allegations, counter-allegations and controversy. On the eve of the election, the newly-formed UT Chandigarh Cricketers Association has complained to the Electoral Officer that UTCA officials were ignoring the Lodha Committee recommendations and the BCCI constitution for the election. In a complaint to the Electoral Officer Anil Kumar, the player association alleged that though UTCA had announced that the elections would be held on September 21, no list of contesting members was displayed on its website. They further alleged that the date of election was announced without a 15-day notice, which is required as per the guidelines of BCCI and the Societies Act (1968), under which UTCA is registered. As per the election circular, the notice of election was issued on September 13, last date of filing nominations was September 16, and the last date of withdrawing nominations was September 17. This was followed by the scrutiny of documents on September 18, after which the valid nominations were to be displayed the same day at 6pm. Rules flouted? “UTCA is holding elections tomorrow without complying with the requirements of the BCCI constitution. The list of members is neither displayed on the website nor pasted on the notice board,” stated a statement issued by the player association. “No former cricketer was allowed to file the nomination and also the head coach for the senior group has been appointed without a cooling off period. Besides this, he was first appointed as selector and then coach,” said the statement, adding: “There is not even a single expert in the nomination process. The nominations are filed by political leaders, chartered accountants, son of a current general secretary and cloth merchants. Non compliance of requirements means elections to the post of office-bearer will be considered null and void, as per the constitution and the same should be ordered immediately.” It was also alleged that UTCA’s general secretary should not be holding his post as he is already over 70, the age-limit for office-bearers as per the Lodha Committee recommendations. The association alleged that this office-bearer, Subhash Mahajan, is promoting his son in administration: “The person has already turned 70 and still representing the UTCA. He has been issuing the election circular. His son has been nominated for the post of the joint secretary. This association has disregarded the former players in the very first trials conducted.” Term ending When contacted, Subhash Mahajan said his term would get over after the elections. “I am not aware about the law, but I am still the general secretary of UTCA. As no elections have been held so far, I am automatically retaining the post,” said Mahajan. UTCA president Sanjay Tandon denied that rules have been ignored, and added that the allegations are motivated. “Wrong information. No such attempt. One person whose son was not selected is making such baseless accusations,” said Tandon.
