P’kula MC to process 75% garbage by December-end

The Municipal Corporation (MC) now plans to process 75 per cent garbage by December-end to improve its ranking under the smart city project. Earlier, the MC had launched segregated door-to-door waste collection at four wards. Now, the MC has included 10 more wards for segregated waste collection thus covering the entire Panchkula city. The MC plans to process 50 per cent of the wet garbage within a month. The MC has also urged societies to construct their own onsite compost pits to process wet garbage.

The move will help civic body improve its smart city ranking Panchkula, September 20 The setting up of the garbage processing plant at Jheuriwala village in Panchkula will be delayed as companies, which applied for the project did not qualify for the work. The Municipal Corporation (MC) now plans to process 75 per cent garbage by December-end to improve its ranking under the smart city project. Earlier, the MC had launched segregated door-to-door waste collection at four wards. Now, the MC has included 10 more wards for segregated waste collection thus covering the entire Panchkula city. Around 70 tonnes of wet garbage will be turned into manure at the four material collection centres (MCC) set up in various parts of the city. These include collection centres at Industrial Area, Phase I, Sector 12, Mansa Devi Complex and the Sector 23 dumping ground. The MC plans to process 50 per cent of the wet garbage within a month. Rest of the garbage lifted by a private company will be used in biogas plant. According to information wet garbage collected from across Panchkula city would be processed into manure, which would be sold to farmers and city residents at nominal cost. The MC has also urged societies to construct their own onsite compost pits to process wet garbage. The civic body will provide knowhow for setting up compost pits. The Panchkula Municipal Commissioner-cum-Administrator, Rajesh Jogpal, said sanitation workers had already been directed to collect segregated garbage from households in the city. “As the setting up of the garbage processing plant will be delayed, we have decided to manually process 75 per cent of the wet and dry waste, which will help in improving the city’s ranking under the smart city project,” he added. “All waste, including fruits, vegetables, eggshells, tea bags, nut shells, shredded newspaper, paper, cardboard, grass, leaves, branches, twigs, house plants, hay, straw, sawdust, woodchips, cotton and wool rags, dryer and vacuum cleaner lint, hair, fur and fireplace ashes will be dumped at the MCC. This waste will be turned into compost,” he said. “We have imposed fine on 300 residents as well as bulk waste generators in the city, who failed to handover segregated wet and dry garbage to sanitation workers moving door-to-door,” he added. “As many as 510 challans have been issued to shopkeepers and vendors using plastic bags, banned by the MC,” he said. As the garbage processing plant will be delayed, we have decided to manually process 75 per cent of the wet and dry waste, which will help improve Panchkula’s ranking under the smart city project. —
