Akash Ghai Mohali, November 7 While the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has been spending around Rs 4 crore a year on the maintenance of public parks, the job is not being done properly. Deputy Mayor Manjit Singh Sethi, who has already raised the issue with Mayor Kulwant Singh and MC Commissioner Bhupinder Singh, said he would now shoot a communiqué in this regard to the Secretary, Department of Local Government, Punjab. “We (the MC) hired the services of four private players for maintenance of public parks, a total of 556. All the private players have been given different responsibilities for the purpose. Still the work is not satisfactory,” said the Deputy Mayor, adding that broken swings and benches could be seen at several parks. “The iron grills installed on the boundaries are not being painted at several parks. Cutting of grass and repairs of broken pathways and non-functional lights were awaited in several parks,” said Paramjit Singh Kahlon, SAD councillor. Sethi added that despite bringing the matter to the notice of MC authorities from time to time, nothing has been done so far. “Now, I will seek intervention of the Secretary of the Department of Local Government as a large sum from public funds is being paid for the maintenance of parks in the town,” said the Deputy Mayor. It is to be noted that the supervision of the maintenance of parks is being done by the electrical wing of the civic body, which is also said to be a major reason behind the poor show. “Basically, the supervision of the parks’ maintenance is a job of the horticulture wing. As the Mohali MC has no such wing, the job is being done by the electrical wing, whose officials are not fully aware of the work in question,” alleged Sethi.
