TRYST WITH CINEMA

It has been several months since I last visited a movie theatre, and this year, I am yet to pay my offerings at the altar of the ticket window. It has been several months since I last visited a movie theatre, and this year, I am yet to pay my offerings at the altar of the ticket window. This time, I will take the plunge only after I have read the reviews. Fingers crossed! Alka Kashyap It was a big day for me — one of the rare occasions when I was going to watch a movie in a theatre. No one in my family is ever keen to visit a cinema hall. I belong to the clan which is miles apart from the tinsel world, no matter what comes and goes. In fact, my family may even be the lowest contributor to the box office revenue. I for one do have a fancy for the feature. So, I keep trying my luck at getting into a theatre. Every time I would bring up the subject, my husband would try to wriggle out of it. For him, it was quite unpalatable to be enclosed in a dark arena and be subjected to all the cacophony. He would instead offer a long drive or an adventurous outing in the lap of nature. The movie buffs around us would always talk so animatedly, and I had nothing to add. After weeks of cajoling, I had managed to convince my better half to accompany me for a movie. Although, dragging him may be the right word. For days, I scanned through the new releases. After careful deliberation, I settled for one. It was an Aditya Chopra venture, written and directed by none other than Vijay Krishna Acharya, who had tasted massive success through his Dhoom series. The cast was a dream combination of Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachhan and Katrina Kaif. That fateful morning had arrived and I was quite excited about it. It was still a couple of hours to the show. I took out a crisp ensemble and started getting ready. Just then, my husband intervened. With an amused look on his face, he said: “Why are you dressing up so much. After all, you have to sit in a dark hall where no one will notice you." Concurring with his suggestion, I got into something casual, tossed my hair into a messy bun and off I went. I didn't want to disagree with him on any point and just held my breath till we reached the theatre. The movie started and so did the torture. The dark and dingy scenes were getting murkier. Half an hour had passed, and we couldn’t see any storyline developing. Uneasy, my husband went out for a stroll. He didn't want to spoil my fun, so he brought me a big pack of popcorns and a large cola. Munching through my popcorns, I glanced at his face time and again. The movie was pathetic and I was trying to gauge his reaction to it, almost guilty of bringing him to the theatre. Soon, my tension eased when I heard him comfortably snoring in his seat. The minute our ordeal ended, we dashed to the exit door for a breath of fresh air. It was not surprising to see that it sank without a trace. The fate of the movie had also sealed my fate of visiting a theatre again. It has been several months since the movie experience, and this year, I am yet to pay my offerings at the altar of the ticket window. Once again, I am mustering courage to ask His Highness to take me out for a movie. This time, I will be more careful — I will take the plunge only after I have read the reviews. Fingers crossed!
