Though a surprise, the excitement has come as a welcome change for not only Kalpana but also her mother. The specially-abled shuttler is representing the country in the Unified Badminton Championship, which started today in Thailand. Kalpana and Tanveer Singh, both from the Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities, Sector 31, are participating in the championship along with their unified partners Arpita Malik and Sanyam Grover. For the last 10 days, Kalpana had been keenly waiting for the tournament. But her mother, Hema, was worried. “She had never seen her passport before leaving for Thailand a few days back,” said Hema. “I was a bit worried but this was the least we could do for her happiness. She knows the difference between good and bad. I just wish that she has a wonderful experience,” she added. At the age of 5, Kalpana joined the Government Rehabilitation Institute for Intellectual Disabilities. “She never had a dream of playing for India or for that matter even taking up badminton. She was more of a reserved person who enjoyed spending her time in the kitchen, mostly baking,” said Hema. Kalpana joined the Special Olympics Sports Program in 2016 and participated in athletics, floor ball, badminton, basketball, cricket, golf and netball. “Kalpana’s coach Sheetal Negi has a big role to play in her life. She always pushed her to try new things. Kalpana has shown great determination when it comes to badminton,” said Hema.
