Aus tame Lanka, Kiwis lord over Kenya

Sri Lanka held their ground in the second half but could not overcome the deficit as Australia finally won the match 50-36. In the second match of the day, New Zealand beat Kenya 46-37. Kiwis led the first quarter 13-9 and added another 13 points to their tally to finish the first half at 26-17. Apart from hosts India, the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Kenya, Sri Lanka and New Zealand are competing in the tournament.

Patiala, December 6 Australia registered a 50-36 win over Sri Lanka in an International Kabaddi Tournament match at Raja Bhalindra Singh Sports Complex here today. Aussies maintained their supremacy over the Lankans right from the beginning as they led the first quarter 17-5 and extended their lead to 31-12 at the end of the first half. Sri Lanka held their ground in the second half but could not overcome the deficit as Australia finally won the match 50-36. In the second match of the day, New Zealand beat Kenya 46-37. Kiwis led the first quarter 13-9 and added another 13 points to their tally to finish the first half at 26-17. Kenya picked 12 points in comparison to New Zealand's eight in the third quarter to stay in the hunt, but the Kiwis proved their superiority in the last quarter to eventually win the match 46-37. Minister for Forest and Social Justice, Government of Punjab, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said his government was committed to promote sports in Punjab and added that maximum facilities were being offered to the sportspersons under the new sports policy. Apart from hosts India, the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Kenya, Sri Lanka and New Zealand are competing in the tournament. The minister said the team which would win the tournament would receive a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh, while the teams finishing second and third would get Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively.
