Interest of small, poor farmers will be protected: Punjab minister tells farmer leaders

Chandigarh, May 23 (PTI) Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Monday assured farmer leaders that the interest of small and poor farmers, who turned barren land into cultivable plots, would be protected during a drive against encroachment on Panchayat lands. During a meeting with representatives of 23 farmer bodies of Punjab here, he said no one"s house on Panchayat land would be demolished.At the same time, the minister said the Punjab government was removing illegal occupants from the Panchayat lands only after completing the legal process, according to an official release.A joint nine-member committee of government officials and representatives of farmer organisations would be formed to identify farmers who turned barren land into cultivable stretches.He also said to provide relief in such cases, if required, the matter would be taken up in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.The minister said the state government will continue its drive to remove illegal occupants from Panchayat lands. On the request of the farmer leaders, the minister issued directions to the officers of the department to ensure that a 15 days" notice be served before removing illegal encroachments from panchayat lands.He further said if any illegal occupant wants to present any document in his favour, he can give it to the district development and panchayat officer, which will be thoroughly examined.Dhaliwal said an appeal by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to vacate illegal possession of Panchayat lands was getting a good response.He said people can voluntarily relinquish possession of the Panchayat land by June 30, after which action would be initiated.The minister also clarified that the agriculture panchayat land from which illegal occupation is being removed, the department is giving present occupier priority to get that land on lease.
