Death toll reaches 3 in Panipat gurdwara roof cave-in

Chandigarh: Two more dead bodies were recovered from the debris of the historic Panipat gurdwara on Grand Trunk road a day after its roof caved in on Monday afternoon. It was around 4.30 pm on Monday that a part of the Gurdwara roof had caved in.Panipat DSP (headquarters) Jagdeep Singh said, "We have taken out two more bodies today. Rs 2 lakh will be given to seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh to those who sustained minor injuries. All three dead persons were labourers working inside the gurdwara at the time of roof collapse. They were living in Panipat city in a room.

The death toll in the mishap at Shri Guru Singh Sabha Pehli Patshahi has thus reached three.Police said that the deceased have been identified as Dheeraj, 22, and Nanhey, 30, both residents of Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh, and Badshah, 38, of Bareilly also in UP.Nine injured persons were rescued on Monday from the accident site and were admitted to different hospitals. They all are out of danger. It was around 4.30 pm on Monday that a part of the Gurdwara roof had caved in.Panipat DSP (headquarters) Jagdeep Singh said, "We have taken out two more bodies today. All three dead persons were labourers working inside the gurdwara at the time of roof collapse. They were living in Panipat city in a room."He added that rescue operations, being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Haryana Police, were still in progress as four more persons could be buried under the debris. The DSP said that though the exact cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained but it seems that it was due to some carelessness in the construction activities being undertaken inside the shrine.Chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar also visited the accident site on Tuesday and announced assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the family members of those killed. Rs 2 lakh will be given to seriously injured and Rs 1 lakh to those who sustained minor injuries. Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar also visited the shrine.On CM's directions, a high-level committee to be headed by Panipat additional deputy commissioner Rajiv Mehta has been constituted to carry out inquiry and to submit report within 15 days.Executive engineer of state public works (buildings and roads) department would be member secretary and other members would include executive engineer city division of Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, executive engineer of Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board and Panipat DSP (headquarters).
