Teachers begin hunger strike

DELAY IN PROMOTIONSOur CorrespondentPatiala, October 12Members of the Elementary Teachers’ Union started an indefinite chain hunger strike in protest against the government over delay in promotions as head teachers and centre head teachers in front of the Education Department office here. But after the decision, several teachers’ organisations filed petitions in the HC against the promotions of head teachers citing seniority. The court while hearing petitions filed against the promotion of teachers, allowed the Education Department to promote the teachers who had joined before 2006. The teachers alleged that officials of the Education Department had failed to address their long-pending issues and their reluctant behaviour had forced them to launch a massive protest against the government. The union members alleged that officials of the Education Department had failed to address their long-pending demands which forced them to intensify their stir.

DELAY IN PROMOTIONS Our Correspondent Patiala, October 12 Members of the Elementary Teachers’ Union started an indefinite chain hunger strike in protest against the government over delay in promotions as head teachers and centre head teachers in front of the Education Department office here. The teachers alleged that officials of the Education Department had failed to address their long-pending issues and their reluctant behaviour had forced them to launch a massive protest against the government. Earlier on September 22, the members had also staged gherao protest against the district education officer (elementary). During the protest, the administrative officials assured them of issuing the list till September 27. The protesters alleged that the officials failed to keep their word which forced them to launch a massive protest in front of their office. Notably, the Punjab Government had given its nod to promote 4,500 head teachers from ETT teacher post and 58 block primary education officers (BPEO) from the centre head teacher post in August this year. But after the decision, several teachers’ organisations filed petitions in the HC against the promotions of head teachers citing seniority. The court while hearing petitions filed against the promotion of teachers, allowed the Education Department to promote the teachers who had joined before 2006. The union members alleged that officials of the Education Department had failed to address their long-pending demands which forced them to intensify their stir.
