Man sets self ablaze in Sec 44 market

According to the police, Gulati runs a tavern from a rented premises and the shop owner had asked him to vacate it. Raj Kumar Gulati, a resident of Sector 24 who runs a tavern in the market, poured petrol on his body and set himself ablaze at around 12.30 pm. He was tense due to this and over a pending court case, which prompted him to take the step. People nearby tried to save him and called the police, who rushed him to the GMCH-32.

Chandigarh, November 22 A 32-year-old man tried to immolate self in the Sector 44 market here this afternoon. Raj Kumar Gulati, a resident of Sector 24 who runs a tavern in the market, poured petrol on his body and set himself ablaze at around 12.30 pm. People nearby tried to save him and called the police, who rushed him to the GMCH-32. His condition is said to be critical. According to the police, Gulati runs a tavern from a rented premises and the shop owner had asked him to vacate it. He was tense due to this and over a pending court case, which prompted him to take the step. Sources said Gulati was paying Rs 10,000 a day as rent to the owner and the latter had found another tenant who was ready to pay Rs 12,000. The police have not registered a case so far and are waiting for Gulati to record his statement, which could not be done today owing to his condition.
