A service lane below the flyover in Mylapore that takes motorists towards Royapettah signifies a struggle for drivers of MTC buses. The lane, which connects Royapettah High Road in Mylapore with Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai intersection, is considerably narrow. Motorists from Mylapore, Mandavali, Luz Corner and R.A. Puram, use the narrow lane to get to other major sections of the city, which include Thousand lights, Royapettah, Anna Salai, Nungambakkam and Egmore. The lane also links Mylapore (via Luz Church Road) with Cathedral Road and Royapettah High Road. “Often, MTC buses get struck on this narrow service lane, especially due to motorcyclists coming in the wrong direction,” says S. Ravishankar, a motorist from Mylapore. The two-lane flyover and the service lanes, which links Mylapore and Royapettah, are under the maintenance of Greater Chennai Corporation. There are a few potholes on the service lanes. The service lane (towards Mylapore) is characterised by unauthorised parking of vehicles. The space below the flyover is strewn with garbage, including plastic waste from the neighbourhood. Corporation officials say better street lights, especially at the intersection of the ramp of the flyover and the service lane (towards Royapettah), will be installed to ensure safety of road users including pedestrians. Steps will also be taken to put an end to the practice of dumping garbage below the flyover.
