The Greater Chennai Corporation is building a drinking water outlet on 10th Main Road in Ashok Nagar, in a move to supplement the supply of water through pipes and tankers by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. This initiative is part of the Amma Drinking Water Scheme. According to Corporation officials, an exercise to set up water distribution outlets in all the 200 wards in the 15 zones, with the objective of making potable water accessible and affordable for all, was started two years ago. At present, only 60 Wards in the city have got this facility. The facility is expected to benefit over 18 lakh people, officials say. Each Corporation ward will have one such outlet with a capacity of more than 20,000 litres of water. Private firms were roped in to supply water to these outlets every day. Initially, it was planned that the civic body will provide bubble-top cans but due to the costs involved in such an exercise, residents were asked to bring their pots. A family is allowed to take up to 20 litres of water every day without paying any fee, the civic officials say. Beneficiaries should provide a photocopy of their family ration card as address proof. According to Corporation officials, more than 15,000 households will benefit from the Ashok Nagar facility which is expected to open in a month’s time.
