As police delay case, man nabs phone thief

Police sources said Simiyon, a medical representative with a private firm, had bought an iPhone for Rs 28,000. As he was talking to the owner, the device went missing.

CHENNAI: Most people who have had a mobile phone stolen are likely to lodge a police complaint and leave it at that, but Perambur resident S Simiyon decided to act.The 23-year-old collected CCTV camera footage from the Purasawalkam store from where it went missing. Later, with the help of a friend, he lured the thief with a job offer and handed him over to the police.On Thursday, however, police claimed credit. When inquiries didn’t evoke a proper response, he approached the Kilpauk police. “They were not ready to accept a complaint. I had to for two days to get a CSR copy,” said Simiyon.“After an endless wait they took the complaint, which hinted that they were not going to seriously act,” said Simiyon.It had taken nearly six months of saving to get a phone and he was detremined to get it back, said Simiyion who decided to take the help of his friend Jaffar, 24, to nab the thief. After CCTV camera footage from the showroom showed a man taking away the device, they found he had come to port his mobile to another network and got his number.The true caller list then gave his name as Pankaj Kumar before a search revealed his Facebook account, but a query on FB messenger got not reply. “We then got a list of his close friends and one of them responded when we said were willing to give Pankaj a job,” said the Simiyon.The two friends got another friend, a man from Bihar, to speak to the suspect and got his new number. “We called Pankaj and he said he was interested in the offer.”On Wednesday, Pankaj, who works in a plywood shop in Madhavaram, came to a designated spot where the two friends nabbed him and handed him over to the Kilpauk police.
