After eight years, the escalators at the MRTS railway station in Chintadripet are moving. It is a week since they started functioning. In March 2010, Southern Railway gave a facelift to the Chintadripet station. However, over the years, it fell into a derelict state. And the escalators also remained out of service. As a result, commuters had to climb at least 60 steps to reach the platforms which are located at a height of 14 metres from the road level. “We are attending to pressing problems raised by commuters. Easy accessibility, especially through escalators and lifts, and safety are major concerns raised by commuters,” says a Railway official. Railway officials say escalators and lifts in most MRTS stations don’t function mainly due to water seepage, technical faults and theft of spareparts from these stations. Efforts are also being taken up to clean stormwater drains in these stations; provide more lighting and install CCTV cameras. RPF police personnel have been instructed to have regular surveillance of these stations, officials say.
