‘Expedite construction of culvert on Outer Ring Road’

  • | Saturday | 14th July, 2018

Residents of Varadharajapuram and Mudichur have requested the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) to take steps to expedite culvert construction work on Outer Ring Road. The work which stretches from the intersection of Mudichur Road and Outer Ring Road to Kishkinta is progressing at a tardy pace. Other demands by residents include: widening the intersections of Outer Ring Road and roads leading to residential localities. The box-type culverts are being constructed to drain rainwater from Rayappa Nagar, Selva Nagar, Shanthi Nikethan, Ashtalakshmi Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Varadharajapuram; and Amudham Nagar, Mudichur, into Adyar river. Steps must be taken to complete the work before the onset of northeast monsoon,” said V. Rajasekaran, president, Federation of Varadharajapuram Welfare Association.

“The construction work was started last November. However, nothing much has been done along the corridor. Steps must be taken to complete the work before the onset of northeast monsoon,” said V. Rajasekaran, president, Federation of Varadharajapuram Welfare Association. It may be noted that during last year’s monsoon, residential localities were flooded. Residents point out that the Kancheepuram district administration must take steps to construct rainwater inlets to houses. The inlets should in turn be connected to the culverts. Other demands by residents include: widening the intersections of Outer Ring Road and roads leading to residential localities. Rajasekaran said, “The intersection is only 30ft wide and if a four-wheeler enters the intersection, another four-wheeler cannot pass through the stretch in the opposite direction. To avoid taking a U-turn, which can be accessed by travelling for an additional one kilometre, a few motorists drive in the wrong direction. If a pedestrian underpass is constructed between Rayappa Nagar and Kishkinta, traffic congestion would be reduced.”
