TN: 2 cops try to pacify groups, assaulted

CHENNAI: Two police personnel were attacked in separate incidents when they tried to pacify fighting groups at Pulianthope and Royapuram on Friday.A police sub-inspector attached to the Royapuram police station was assaulted with a small knife on Friday night when he tried to calm down two drunk men involved in a fight.Police said a team on night patrol received a distress call through the control room about some unknown men fighting on Cemetery Road at Royapuram, causing nuisance to the public.Royapuram sub-inspector Selvakumar, 30, rushed to the spot. He saw two drunk men hitting each other. "When he tried to pacify them, one of them pulled out a small knife from his pocket and slashed Selvakumar's hand with it and also stabbed the other man," said a police officer.However, the injury did not deter the sub-inspector. He got hold of the accused with help from some residents and took him to the police station.The warring men were identified as Dayalan, 35, and Karthik, 33, from the same locality. They decided to have drinks together, but they got into an argument, eventually ending up exchanging blows.While Dayalan was the one who attacked the sub-inspector, Selvakumar and Karthik were rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital for treatment.Dayalan is also involved in several robbery and theft cases. The Royapuram police nabbed him and a court remanded him in judicial custody.In another incident, five people were arrested after they trod on a woman sub-inspector inside the Pulianthope station. The incident took place when she intervened to settle a quarrel between the five people and the petitioner.Police had summoned Raja, 25, a resident of K P Park near Pulianthope, to the Pulianthope all-woman station to question him regarding a family dispute. SI Ambika was leading the inquiry. Raja had a heated exchange with other family members at the station. Ambika was caught in the crossfire. She tried to pacify them but they trod on her. Based on Ambika's complaint, police arrested five people for attacking her and a court sent them to prison.
