CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee ( TNCC ) president S Thirunavukkarasar on Thursday expressed disappointment over the minimum support price (MSP) for sugarcane announced by the Centre on Wednesday. The Centre should increase the MSP for sugarcane to Rs 3,500 per tonne,” Thirunavukkarasar said.According to him, the Economic Affairs Committee (of ministers) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi that met on Wednesday announced an MSP of Rs 275 per quintal at 10% recovery. With increase in recovery percentage, the new MSP works out to Rs 261.25 per quintal.“In Tamil Nadu, along with state incentives, the farmers were already getting Rs 275 per quintal. He demanded an MSP of Rs 3,500 per tonne for sugarcane farmers. While the BJP government at the Centre came to power to promising to implement the M S Swaminathan Committee recommendations of offering an MSP at 50% over the costs incurred by the farmers, it has only let them down repeatedly with false promises over the past four years, he said in a statement.“The new support price announced by the Centre, which worked out to Rs 261.25 per quintal at a recovery rate of 10%, will be of no benefit to sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu, since along with state government support they are already getting Rs 275 per quintal.
