Stella Maris gets new herbal garden

The garden was set up with inputs from herbal plants enthusiast Subashree Vijay. She recalled a visit to the herbal garden inside the Iyyappan temple in Tiruchi and how the plants had provided a relaxing atmosphere. As one enters the campus of Stella Maris College, the sweet scent of canonball (Nagalinga) flowers wafts by. The college has a new thematic herbal garden where many varieties of plants including tulasi, mehandi, katrazhai, thippili vasambu and arali have been planted in five concentric semi-circles. Recently, the garden with its 100-odd plants in front of Shanthi Bhavan was inaugurated by the Chennai Provincial, Sister Leena D’Souza.

She recalled a visit to the herbal garden inside the Iyyappan temple in Tiruchi and how the plants had provided a relaxing atmosphere. She also unveiled the statue of St. Francis of Assissi. Sister Rosy Joseph, principal of the college, and secretary Sister Susan Matheikal graced the occasion. Students of the 1991 batch that met recently contributed money towards establishing the garden. Praveena Chandrasekar, a former student, said the garden is symbolic of the peace and quiet that the campus has always been known for. The garden was set up with inputs from herbal plants enthusiast Subashree Vijay.
