Indian gaur rescued from farm well in TN

TRICHY: A three-year-old Indian gaur was rescued from an 80-foot-deep farm well at Vellayagoundampatti outside the Puthanatham reserve forest in Manapparai range in the early hours on Sunday.The Indian gaur accidentally fell into the well on Saturday.A five-member forest department team, led by K Asokan of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve veterinary hospital, reached the spot around 6. The water was pumped out.After tranquilising it, they lifted the gaur -- weighing 700kg -- from the well using a crane.The gaur was unhurt despite falling into the 80-foot-deep well.Speaking to TOI, district forest officer D Sujatha stressed on the need to fence open wells outside reserve forests. Apart from forest personnel, a 10-member fire and rescue services team was also involved in the rescue operation that lasted more than six hours.There was two-foot deep water in the well. 30pm on Saturday.
