Oil tanker: Captain of ship held, sailors released

CHENNAI: A day after four Indian sailors were rescued from the Panama-flagged oil tanker Rise Dignity, police arrested the master ( captain ) of the ship on Sunday. When questioned, the master assured them that they will be taken care off.The four sailors were released after police obtained a statement from them. He was later handed over to the police for further action.A police statement said Pawan Kumar was arrested under charges of cheating and conspiracy under IPC and under the Foreigners (Amendment Act) 2004. The men were made to hide in the engine room as their names were not on the crew list.Captain Pawan Kumar was detained soon after the rescue and was questioned by immigration officials in detail. He also mentioned that their names were not included because the shipping company needed to show expenses and other details to the Indian government.

The case was registered based on a complaint given by R Prakash, one of the sailors from Cuddalore Officials of the mercantile marine department boarded the ship on Sunday and conducted a detailed inspection as part of their investigation.A report will be filed on Monday to decide the course of action.Prakash, in his complaint, said the sailors were tasked with cleaning the oil tank, painting and moving materials and others. He also mentioned that their names were not included because the shipping company needed to show expenses and other details to the Indian government. When questioned, the master assured them that they will be taken care off.The four sailors were released after police obtained a statement from them. They have been told to return to the city for questioning. tnn
