72nd Independence Day celebrated in city

In the Office of the Accountant General (A&E), Tamil Nadu, Devika Nayar, principal accountant general (G & SSA) Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, hoisted the tricolour. Meanwhile, from honouring outstanding staff to rewarding proficient students, the city saw several organisations celebrating Independence Day with patriotic fervour. The Chennai Port Trust and the Tamil Nadu Consumer Redressal Commission too had organised celebrations to mark the Independence Day. For the first time, Governor Bhanwarilal Purohit on Wednesday hoisted the National flag at the Raj Bhavan on the occasion of 72nd Independence Day. The Chetpet Walkers’ Association celebrated the Independence day by requesting the conservancy staff of the Chennai Corporation to hoist the National flag.

A new flag pole was installed and the CRPF contingent presented the Guard of Honour. Later in the evening, the Governor, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani and other State Ministers planted saplings at a new rose garden in Raj Bhavan as part of an ‘At Home’ tea party during which cultural programmes were also held. Meanwhile, from honouring outstanding staff to rewarding proficient students, the city saw several organisations celebrating Independence Day with patriotic fervour. After hoisting the flag, Metropolitan Transport Corporation managing director A. Anbu Abraham recognised drivers and staff of the Corporation for their service. MTC driver K. Saravanan and conductor R. Boopalan, who returned a sum of ?40,000 accidentally left behind by a passenger to the police, were also awarded. State Express Transport Corporation gave cash awards to wards of employees who excelled in class X and class XII examinations. Jaisankar, accountant general (A&E) Tamil Nadu, said, Electronic Pension Payment Order, being introduced, will help in faster payment to pensioners. While Income Tax Department had organised a performance by students of A.R. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, there was a special rendition of patriotic songs by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited’s music troupe. Sushil Khumar, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, hoisted the flag at Aayakar Bhavan and donated ?1 lakh towards Kerala Flood Relief. The Chennai Port Trust and the Tamil Nadu Consumer Redressal Commission too had organised celebrations to mark the Independence Day. At Indian Oil Bhavan, S. Senthil Kumar, Executive Director, regional services (Southern Region) hoisted the National Flag in the presence of R Sitharthan, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Mr. Senthil Kumar in his address said that the call of the hour was to evolve and develop specific integrated missions to take the country forward on the path of sustainable development. The Chetpet Walkers’ Association celebrated the Independence day by requesting the conservancy staff of the Chennai Corporation to hoist the National flag. Sweets and notebooks were distributed to students on the occasion. G. Karthik of the Association participated. I-Day at Kancheepuram In Kancheepuram, demonstration of the Police District Dog Squad was the star attraction at the celebrations held at the Anna Police Parade ground. Three events showcasing the sniffing skills of the dogs were displayed by the trainers and there was also a two-wheeler rally taken out by policemen, highlighting the need to wear helmets. Collector P.Ponnaiah took part in the grama sabha held at Pappanallur village in Achirapakkam block. He assured the residents that their demands such as the revival of bus service, setting up of a post office and nationalised bank branch in their hamlet would be taken up with the departments concerned.
