For the last few months, Ayodhya Colony in Velachery is devoid of its usual quiet. Four months ago, an opening was created in the median on Taramani Link Road, in front of a lifestyle showroom. Since then, taking advantage of this opening, motorists coming from the SRP Tools side enter Ayodhya Colony and access Velachery Main Road through Gandhi Road. Driving through Ayodhya Colony, they are able to bypass the traffic congestion near Vijaynagar bus stand. As a result, there is no let-up in the flow of vehicles. The situation hits the nadir during rush hour. “The roads in Ayodhya Colony are narrow; but that is no deterrent to these motorists. Due to honking of horns, residents have to deal with the problem of noise, till late in the night every day. Not only car drivers and motorcyclists, van and truck drivers also drive through the residential colony,”says S. Balaji. As a few educational institutions are located on Velachery Main Road, there is heavy traffic on weekday, and as a mall is located on the Road, residents are not spared even during weekends. Residents say they are not able to walk on the streets safely. They want to restore the earlier arrangement where a right turn was found in front of the TCS office and blocked the right turn in front of Ayodhya Colony. They also pointed out that many representations had been made to the traffic police, in vain.
