MTC ropes in retired staff to regulate traffic at key stops

more-in With the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) facing a human resource crunch, the organisation is resorting to out-of-the-box ideas to overcome the situation. It has now planned to hire retired checking inspectors on contract to regulate buses at important stops in the city. As part of this, the MTC would be appointing 100 persons to regulate buses in key bus stops, including Chennai Central Station, Guindy, Velachery and Porur. A senior official of the MTC said there had been complaints from commuters about buses not stopping properly at the designated spots and also share autos causing traffic bottlenecks to MTC drivers in accessing the bus stops. Though the MTC has, at several bus stops, installed temporary barricades to prevent share autos from entering the bus bays and causing hardships to the commuters and bus drivers, the problem remained unsolved. Financially unviable For the MTC, it is not financially viable to recruit people to regulate the traffic at these bus stops. And yet it had to be done, which is when the idea of hiring retired staff came up, and was instantly adopted, sources said. The MTC official said as of now 60 retired MTC staffers had been posted at several bus stops in and around the city, with 40 more to be posted at locations where commuters and bus crew face problems. The retired MTC staff would be working in two shifts — in the morning and evening peak hours. They would be paid daily salary, the MTC official said.
