more-in In the last one month, about 70 M-sand manufacturing units, which were issued notices, have sought quality approval from the Public Works Department. Of the nearly 320 manufacturers spread across the State, only 80 have applied for approval for quality of M-sand being produced. The Department has so far certified nearly 66 manufacturers. Manufacturing units which had not complied to the quality norms were issued notices. As complaints mount regarding poor quality of M-sand pervading the market, the department’s assessment committee will discuss means to bring in the remaining M-sand manufacturers also in its fold. Stringent measures, including possibility of sealing units that are yet to get quality approval, would be discussed at the next meeting in September-end, according to PWD officials. The district administration concerned would also be roped in for the initiative. The committee includes representatives from Anna University and IIT Madras. The limited river sand sources have led to the increase in supply and use of M-sand across the State. Of the total demand of 35,000 loads of sand, M-sand contributes to nearly 12,500 daily. “We want to double the availability of M-sand supply in a few months to tackle the shortage of river sand,” an official said. The department has also started uploading the list of M-sand manufacturers who have been certified for quality product in www.tnsand.in, he added. There are also plans to start a campaign to spread awareness about M-sand and the need to check quality. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu State Sand Lorry Owners’ Federation plans to submit a list of units that are producing M-sand of poor quality. Its president S.Yuvaraj said the process to ensure availability of quality sand is being done with much delay. This led to proliferation of units that often pass quarry dust as M-sand. The government must accelerate monitoring measures. Call for checks Members of Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Co-ordinate Welfare Federation have also represented to the State government to conduct periodical checks in M-sand manufacturing units to ensure quality. Its president R. Panneerselvam said a separate board must be created for minerals resources security to streamline supply and curb sub-standard product.
