Korean music troupe to perform in Chennai

“In Kochi, they performed in a college; in Kolkata it was at a fest, in Guntur at a club, in Hyderabad in an auditorium and in Chennai it will be a mall.” CHENNAI: This weekend, people in Chennai will have an opportunity to listen to a Korean music ensemble.Music Group NaMu, a Korean traditional music ensemble that made its official debut in 2015, will be playing in Phoenix Marketcity at 6.00 pm on September 22.The programme is being organised by InKo Centre in association with Center Stage Korea, Korea Arts Management Service and the ministry of culture, sports and tourism.“This is the first time that the troupe is performing in India though its leader, Aram Lee, has come down here earlier with another group. He is very inspired by Indian musicians such as flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia,” says Rathi Jafer, director, InKo Centre.“Their music is distinctly Korean but lends itself to other people appreciating it.”NaMu has collaborated with various artists and crossed over many genres with a wide range of projects that include classical music, and dance beats.The group comprises Aram Lee, who believes in enhancing his rigorous training in traditional instrumentation by continuously experimenting with newer forms of creative expression, ajaeng and janggu player Minwang Hwang, vocalist and percussionist Seongryong Yeo and acoustic and electric bass player Inhwan Choi.NaMu is on a five-city tour of India, with Chennai being the last stop.“In each place we have tried to provide different spaces and audiences,” says Jafer.
