‘Ban flagpoles of pol parties in public places’

On its part, the election commission issued direction to police and revenue officials to remove all flagpoles and hoardings put up by political parties, but no follow up action had been taken, the PIL-petitioner complained.The PIL said political parties encroached roadsides, parks, play grounds and such other common places without obtaining any permission from government agencies, and erected their flagpoles permanently. Party flags are hoisted occasionally, hindering public and vehicular movement, it said.At times, such structures and functions around them became source of clashes between groups, triggering law and order problem, the petitioner said temporarily flag poles were erected during conferences and public meetings, by using power drillers. They would damage underground telecom and electric cables, he said.Stating that officials turn a blind eye to these atrocious acts for the reasons best known to them, the petitioner said these were offences punishable under Section 3 of Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992.Though representations were made to authorities in this regard, way back in May 2016 itself, till date no action was taken by the authorities, prompting the petitioner to file the present PIL for a direction to the authorities concerned to impose a complete ban on erecting flagpoles permanently or temporarily in public places.
