CHENNAI: Police responding to a distress call about a bid to rob a newly-wed couple frolicking on Neelankarai beach on Saturday night, found it was an elaborate hoax the woman and her lover had cooked up to get rid of the husband Police said K Anitha, 25, from Tuticorin, had married Kathiravan, 27, of Pallavaram, a month ago. On Saturday, the Thiruvanmiyur police who received a call from the control room that a couple was being robbed, rushed to Neelankarai beach and found Kathiravan down on the ground seriously injured, while Anitha stood by and did not seem in a panic.She told the police she and her husband were playing blind man’s buff on the beach, when a man she did not know hit Kathiravan on the head with an iron rod. She told the police that the man escaped with 12 sovereign of gold jewellery and two mobile phones.Doctors who examined Kathiravan told the police his condition was critical and that the blows were clearly aimed to kill. Their suspicions roused, the police grilled Anitha, who kept making contradictory statements. Police found Anitha had made frequent calls to a man from Tuticorin, who was later identified as Antony Jegan, 25, a second year MA History student of Madurai Kamaraj University.Police said under sustained interrogation, Anitha admitted that she and Jegan had been in love for a year. She was scared to reveal this to her parents and married Kathiravan at their bidding. Anitha and Antony then decided to do away with Kathiravan. They had planned to do away with him in Kotagiri last month, but the attempt failed, police said.On Saturday, as soon as Anitha blindfolded Kathiravan, Jegan who was nearby, hit him repeatedly on the head with an iron rod.
