Woman riding pillion dies as tree falls on her

CHENNAI: A 72-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her at Guindy while she was riding pillion on a two-wheeler on Saturday evening. Passersby immediately helped Shanthi get onto her feet.However, Prema had suffered grievous head injuries and lost consciousnesses. First aid was given to Shanthi in the ambulance by the doctors.Prema was immediately taken to the nearby government hospital in Saidapet. This incident created a flutter among motorists who requested the civic body to act upon similar trees in the area. In response, a senior corporation official said the tree was on private land and the concerned land owner should be held responsible, adding that a police investigation would ascertain the cause of the accident.

The woman was identified as BN Prema, a resident of Saidapet.Police said V Shanthi, a daughter of the victim, residing in Korattur, and Prema were on their way to a family function at Madipakkam. As the duo crossed the SPIC building at Guindy along Anna Salai around three in the evening, an old tree located on a vacant plot suddenly collapsed and fell on them.Shanthi told police that before she could realise what was happening, she lost control of the vehicle and found herself on the ground. Passersby immediately helped Shanthi get onto her feet.However, Prema had suffered grievous head injuries and lost consciousnesses. Though locals tried to revive the elderly woman, there was no response from her.In the meantime, police arrived at the accident spot and called up 108 emergency services for medical assistance. First aid was given to Shanthi in the ambulance by the doctors.Prema was immediately taken to the nearby government hospital in Saidapet. After checking her, doctors at the hospital declared that she did not respond to treatment and was brought dead, police added.A complaint was filed under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) -- unnatural death -- at the Guindy police station based on Shanthi's testimony. This incident created a flutter among motorists who requested the civic body to act upon similar trees in the area. In response, a senior corporation official said the tree was on private land and the concerned land owner should be held responsible, adding that a police investigation would ascertain the cause of the accident.
