'Green revolution made India self-sufficient'

CHENNAI: Union minister for agriculture and farmers’ welfare Radha Mohan Singh lauded the efforts made by veteran agriculturist M S Swaminathan for making India self-sufficient.“India is today not only self-sufficient in foodgrains but is also an exporter due to his efforts. We are grateful to Swaminathan, who is the architect of India’s Green Revolution , for this” said Singh after felicitating Swaminathan, the recipient of the 1st World Agriculture Prize, at a function held here on Monday.The minister said it was under the ‘Green Revolution’ programme led by Swaminathan in the 1960s and 80s that wheat and rice seeds with better yields were planted in the farmers' fields.“This revolution made India self-reliant in foodgrain in less than 25 years thereby bringing glory to Swaminathan as the scientific leader of India’s ‘green revolution movement',” he said at the function organised by the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University.Swaminathan was awarded the 1st World Agriculture Prize at the 11th Global Agriculture Leadership Summit in New Delhi, hosted by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture, on October 26.
