Auto driver, who drove into crowd, kills self

CHENNAI: A 31-year-old autorickshaw driver, who drove into a crowd of nearly 40 people at a bus stand near Jain college in Thoraipakkam and killed one on Tuesday, committed suicide at his house in Kannagi Nagar on Wednesday night, police said.The autorickshaw driver, Rajinikanth, who was drunk, was chased for about 4km and apprehended by sub-inspector Tamizhazhagan attached to Thoraipakkam police station when he tried to escape after the incident.One of the commuters identified as Devadoss, a resident of Kannagi Nagar, was killed in the accident and two others were injured.The autorickshaw driver was thrashed by angry passers-by before he was handed over to them, police said. The Guindy traffic investigation wing police registered a case and formally arrested him.As Rajini was drunk, his wife requested police to allow him to return home and promised to bring her husband for investigation on Wednesday.Police said that after Rajini returned home, he regretted his actions, which had resulted in the death of a person.Police said his wife later called them after she found his body hanging in the house.A case was registered by the Kannagi Nagar police and they removed his body and sent it to Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.
