TN: CM confirms cyclone Gaja claimed 13 lives

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday expressed grief over the death of 13 people in cyclone Gaja . The chief minister said efforts were on to restore power.He said around 5,000 trees had been uprooted. Workers, engineers and road inspectors were engaged to clear the tree waste and restore traffic. He announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased.In a statement, the chief minister said people who suffered major injuries would be given a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each while those who sustained minor injuries will get Rs 25,000.Palaniswami, who was in Salem, said he had issued directions to the administrators restore normalcy in the cyclone-affected areas on a war-footing manner.Senior ministers, officers in the rank of IAS and IPS have been deputed by the chief minister to coordinate the relief operations in the affected areas.The chief minister also directed the district collectors and revenue department to assess the damage immediately.He said at least 216 medical camps had been set up to prevent water borne diseases and 405 ambulances were kept ready.Preliminary assessment said 13,000 electric poles had fallen due to wind speed of 110km per hour.
