Pothole claims life of another biker within a week

CHENNAI: Less than a week after a biker fell into a waterfilled pit on the roadside near Tambaram, another biker has fallen victim to an uncovered pit along a road in Kunrathur.Jeeva, 25, was riding in Melma Nagar with a group of friends on Saturday night, when his bike hit the pit and he lost control and ended up crashing into an electricity post.Jeeva was rushed to the government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where he died of head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.Police said Jeeva worked with a courier firm in the locality. On Saturday night, he was going with a group of friends to attend a birthday party. He did not see the small pit on the side of the road as the road was too dark. In fact his friends too did not notice he had fallen. It was only after a while that they began looking for him and returned to find him bleeding by the road side.One of Jeeva’s neighbours, Saraswathi, said, “It is a narrow lane, slushy and non-motorable. We never take this stretch. We have been demanding good street lights, but they remain a dream for us.”Poonamallee traffic investigation police are investigating. Jeeva’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination to the govenrment Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.According to date from the ministry of road transport and highsways for 2015-16, a total of 1,733 road accidents were reported as a result of rutted or potholed roads. Experts say the numbers could be way higher as police don't classify many road accident deaths in a scientific way."Potholes are formed due to poor maintenance and use of substandard construction material and government is liable to pay victims in these cases," said advocate VS Suresh, who handles road accident cases.The state transport department introduced a slew of reforms to reduce the road accident rate after the Supreme Court pulled up the authorities for not taking adequate efforts to ensure road safety.
