Chennai likely to receive light rain on Saturday

CHENNAI: Chennai witnessed cloudy skies and strong wind as a weather system continues to brew over the Bay of Bengal and moves closer to the coast.Weathermen have forecast that the city is likely to receive light rain on Saturday. The intensity of rain will go up on Sunday.The system is very likely to become a severe cyclonic storm -- named Phethai -- in two days before it makes landfall between Ongole and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon. The wind speed in the city was around 19kmph. "It is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours and into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 24 hours," the India Meteorological Department said.The system, which is at present a deep depression, was located around 690km southeast of Chennai and 890km south-southeast of Machilipatnam on Saturday afternoon.Due to cloudy skies and wind, Chennai’s maximum temperature hovered around 28 degree Celsius as against 30 degree Celsius and above on normal days.
