18-month-old falls into boiling sambar, dies

CHENNAI: An 18-month-old girl died of burns after she slipped and fell into a bucket containing hot sambar on Stringers Street in Mannadi.Police said Bhumika lived with her mother Surya, 25, in a makeshift tent on the platform on Stringer Street at the Second Lane Beach Road in Parrys. Surya separated from her husband Murugan, 30, a mechanic, a year ago. Surya made a living by cooking for a pushcart tiffin shop.The incident occurred around 10.30am on Saturday when Surya was making sambar for the business. After making sambar, she stepped into the hut when she heard Bhumika scream in pain.Surya rushed out to find hot sambar all over Bhumika and the vessel lying toppled nearby, police said.The child died on Sunday at the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital despite treatment.An investigation officer said, “Surya left the vessel containing the piping hot liquid on the floor. Bhumika, who was playing nearby, tripped and fell into it.”The doctors who treated Bhumika said she sustained 51% burns. After Bhumika died, the Esplanade police registered a case under the CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) and sent the child’s body for postmortem. They will hand over the body to the family on Monday. Further investigation is on.
