CHENNAI: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the BJP’s doors are open to old friends, Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami said his party would support anyone “who does good for the state.” Reacting to his remark, BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan said the chief minister knew that her party was doing “good work” at the centre.Speaking at an an event to welcome cadres of other parties, the chief minister expressed keenness to see a party that supported Tamil Nadu’s interest forming a government at the Centre. “That is our stand. We will extend support to those who do good for the people of Tamil Nadu. We will never accept anyone who betrays the interests of the people,” Palaniswami said. The popularity of his government was soaring because of the slew of welfare schemes it was implementing.While speculation is rife that the BJP and AIADMK would team up to fight the Lok Sabha elections, there has been no formal announcement on this yet. The CM said the state would follow the footsteps of former chief ministers M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.With the opposition mounting pressure on the AIADMK for “backing” the Modi government’s “anti-Tamil” policies, the ruling party has suddenly become assertive and even aggressive towards the BJP.Senior AIADMK leader and deputy Lok Sabha speaker M Thambidurai walked out of the House to protest the 10% quota bill, while another senior leader Anwhar Raajhaa dubbed the Triple Talaq Bill barbaric.Party leaders say an alliance with BJP was inevitable. AIADMK’s deputy coordinator K P Munusamy told TOI that Modi’s call to old friends during an interactive session with BJP cadres, should be seen only as an attempt to boost cadre morale. “Our leadership will take a decision on alliances based on the sentiments of people and keeping in mind the welfare of the party and the state,” he said.Meanwhile, BJP leader Tamilisai sought to smoothen the ruffles, pointing out that CM Palaniswami had himself endorsed the good work of the Modi government. “The Centre and the state government share a cordial relationship. The CM knows that good schemes are being extended by the Centre. He knows the Centre allocated Rs five lakh crore worth schemes for the state,” she said.AIADMK leaders say they “trust” the CM and his deputy O Panneerselvam to take a sound decision on alliance matters. “Our leadership stands for the rights of Tamils and has not compromised their interests.
