'Address Palaniswami ‘honourable CM’ in assembly'

CHENNAI: Members of the Tamil Nadu assembly must not address chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami by his name inside the house and should address him as Honourable chief minister, ruled deputy speaker Pollachi Jayaraman in the assembly on Monday. Immediately, deputy speaker Jayaraman, who was in the chair, ruled that no one should mention the chief minister by name. Every time speaker used to expunge whatever we said,” said a DMK MLA.Off late, AIADMK MLAs have been addressing the chief minister as Edappadiyar in the assembly. “When Jayalalithaa was alive and we used to call her as Ammaiyar and AIADMK MLAs used to protest stating that her name must not be mentioned in the house. On Monday, when one of the AIADMK MLA, participating in the debate on the budget, mentioned the chief minister’s name.

However, being lunch time not many members of the ruling party as well as opposition benches were present, when Jayaraman gave his ruling.Immediately, deputy leader of opposition S Duraimurugan looked at the deputy speaker sarcastically and signalled, as if wanting to know - What’s the big deal?In the past too, several hours were wasted in the house, whenever DMK MLAs used to address former chief minister J Jayalalithaa by her name and AIADMK MLAs used to retaliate by addressing DMK chief by his name. “When Jayalalithaa was alive and we used to call her as Ammaiyar and AIADMK MLAs used to protest stating that her name must not be mentioned in the house. But at the same time, they used to call our leader by name. Every time speaker used to expunge whatever we said,” said a DMK MLA.Off late, AIADMK MLAs have been addressing the chief minister as Edappadiyar in the assembly. On Monday, when one of the AIADMK MLA, participating in the debate on the budget, mentioned the chief minister’s name.
