CHENNAI: More than two lakh people took free rides on metro trains here on Monday after the 45km phase-1 network became fully operational. CMRL has extended free rides till Tuesday night. Chennai Metro Rail said 2.01 lakh people travelled in the trains across the two corridors after the 10km stretch from Washermenpet to AG-DMS was thrown open on Sunday. They can also board trains from Central Metro to St Thomas Mount. More than 65,000 passengers travelled on Sunday after the new stretch was opened in the evening and subsequently rides were made free for commuters later in the evening.Though a technical glitch disrupted services between AG-DMS and Little Mount on Monday morning with metro trains running on a lesser frequency than normal, trains were operated as usual on the rest of the phase.Commuters can now travel from Washermenpet to Airport via Anna Salai in a matter of 45 minutes for a ticket priced Rs 60.
