Man runover by train trying to save drunk friend

Venkatesh died on the spot, runover by the train, police said quoting a few eyewitnesses.On learning that his friend was dead , a grief-stricken Aravind jumped from the bridge and injured himself. In a bid to hurry to the spot where Aravind was standing, Venkatesh started running on the tracks; he failed to notice a train was coming behind him. They had consumed alcohol and quarrelled on the way back from the marriage.Venkatesh returned home, but an upset Aravind kept calling asking him to talk to him. He told the police that he threatened to kill himself only to make Venkatesh speak to him.Korrukupet railway police have registered a case of accidentaly death and are investigating.

CHENNAI: A drunken quarrel between two friends ended in tragedy on Thursday night, with one of them being runover by a train at Ponneri in Tiruvallur district while running on the tracks in a bid to reach the other who was threatening to kill himself.The man who died, Venkatesh, 22, was a daily wage worker who lived on Thayum Chetty Street in Ponneri. Earlier in the day, he and a friend, Aravind, 26, also a daily wage worker, had attended a friend’s marriage. They had consumed alcohol and quarrelled on the way back from the marriage.Venkatesh returned home, but an upset Aravind kept calling asking him to talk to him. Venkatesh kept cutting off the calls. Aravind then sent an audio message saying he was going to commit suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train on the Ponneri rail bridge.When he got this message, Venkatesh left home and ran to the tracks to talk his friend out of committing suicide. In a bid to hurry to the spot where Aravind was standing, Venkatesh started running on the tracks; he failed to notice a train was coming behind him. Venkatesh died on the spot, runover by the train, police said quoting a few eyewitnesses.On learning that his friend was dead , a grief-stricken Aravind jumped from the bridge and injured himself. He has been admitted to Stanley medical college for treatment. He told the police that he threatened to kill himself only to make Venkatesh speak to him.Korrukupet railway police have registered a case of accidentaly death and are investigating.
