VELLORE: The crew of a private bus plying between Katpadi and Bagayam in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu abandoned a 60-year-old woman passenger at a bus stand when she collapsed in the vehicle after suffering a chest pain on Sunday evening. They fled the scene without arranging medical assistance to the woman or informing anybody. Later, the woman, identified as Booshanam of Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district, was declared dead. However, Vellore superintendent of police K Pravesh Kumar had a different version to tell. He told TOI that he was told that the woman had died in a hit and run incident involving an unidentified biker. “As contradictory reports emerge in the case, we have planned to conduct a fresh inquiry into the case,” he said.On Sunday, Booshanam was returning to Cheyyar after visiting three sons living in Bengaluru. Booshanam, who travelled in a train, got down at Katpadi Railway Junction. She boarded a private bus to reach Vellore new bus stand so that she could catch a bus to Cheyyar where her son, Manjunathan, 37, is living.Booshanam suffered a severe chest pain when she was in the bus and informed fellow passengers about it. The driver halted the bus at Chitoor bus stop in Katpadi and tried to speak to her. Booshanam collapsed inside the bus.The woman was motionless. Fearing police action, the bus driver and conductor dragged the woman out of the bus and abandoned her on a platform at the bus stop, Manjunathan told TOI citing a shopkeeper who informed him about all what had happened.Manjunathan, who is a handloom weaver, said, “A shopkeeper called me from my mother’s phone and informed me that my mother who had fallen unconscious in the bus was dragged out by the crew. They just resumed the trip without even alerting the police or arranging medical assistance. Later the shopkeepers and others alerted the Katpadi police and 108 ambulance service.”“My mother was taken to Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. I haven’t filed any complaint against the bus crew . But their inhuman act raises doubts about whether humanity is surviving in this century,” Manjunathan said.A police officer attached to Katpadi police said preliminary inquiries revealed that the woman had collapsed inside a bus and was abandoned at Chitoor bus stop. As the relatives were hesitant to lodge a complaint, a case was yet to be registered, he added.
