CHENNAI: Cardiothoracic surgery seats are going vacant in many medical colleges in the country because many surgeons think the speciality doesn't have a future. A group of cardio-thoracic surgeons across Asia will attend a conference -- “Reinventing Cardiothoracic Thoracic Surgery” -- in Chennai to get doctors interested in the speciality. At least 59% of the population are affected by heart and lung diseases and a substantial number of people can be managed without surgery. However, there are patients with extreme conditions for whom surgery is inevitable.“Many believe that the field of cardiothoracic surgery is on the wane. Nothing could be more far from the truth. Nearly two lakh heart and lung surgeries performed every year in India with excellent results,” said senior cardiac surgeon Dr Rajan Sethuratnam, who will be organising secretary of the four-day the joint international conference of Asian Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons (ASCVTS) and Indian Association of Cardiovascular-thoracic Surgeons in the city from Thursday.Increasingly, most young doctors opt for general medicine over general surgery for post-graduation as they feel it allows to specialise in popular streams like cardiology, radiology or nephrology. And among doctors who opt for general surgery, many prefer surgical gastroenterology, plastic surgery or onco-surgeries.“This conference will take a message to younger doctors. Cardiac surgeons have a big role to play in interventional techniques, imaging methods and other emerging frontiers. The field shouldn’t be abandoned now,” Dr Sethuratnam said. There has been a huge development in the field of cardiac surgery over the past few years, said senior cardiac surgeon said Dr Rajan Santosham. “From open heart surgeries to minimally invasive techniques, the field of cardiac surgery has come a long way. This conference aims at bringing out the reinvented newer modalities and innovations that are bringing about further advancement to the quality of surgeries,” he said.“We will train surgeons in valve replacement and blood vessel repair because these are also primarily our areas of work,” Sethuratnam. An app that updates cardiac surgeons about the new developments and collect the data of the procedures done in India for analytical outcomes state-wise and nation-wise every month would also be launched, he said.At least 250 international delegates, 1,500 national delegates and more than 100 international speakers will attend the conference. Sessions will include information and knowledge sharing on improving patient outcomes of heart, lung transplant surgeries, minimally invasive valve and coronary artery bypass surgeries, lung surgeries, pediatric and neonatal heart surgeries.“It’s an extravaganza.
