Cong gets 9 LS seats in TN, one in Puducherry

The identification of constituencies will be decided by the DMK seat-sharing committee under DMK treasurer S Duraimurugan along with Congress leaders," Stalin told reporters after the meeting.Stalin denied suggestions that his party was keen on tying up with Vijayakanth 's DMDK.

CHENNAI: The DMK on Wednesday finalised its poll pact with the Congress, offering 10 seats, including Puducherry , to the national party.DMK president M K Stalin and TNCC president K S Alagiri signed the agreement in the presence of All India Congress general secretaries Mukul Wasnik and K C Venugopal at the DMK headquarters in Chennai."As per the agreement, the Congress will contest in nine seats in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry. The identification of constituencies will be decided by the DMK seat-sharing committee under DMK treasurer S Duraimurugan along with Congress leaders," Stalin told reporters after the meeting.Stalin denied suggestions that his party was keen on tying up with Vijayakanth 's DMDK. "We didn't hold talks with the DMDK. If there is any move by us or the DMDK, we will inform the media first," he said. In the AIADMK-BJP camp, seat-sharing talks were stalled over differences with the DMDK. On Tuesday, the AIADMK firmed up its alliance with the BJP, allocating five seats for it, and was said to be in talks with the TMC and Puthiya Tamizhagam.Sources said the Congress began talks with the demand for 15 seats in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry, but it came down to nine and one.The Wednesday meeting lasted less than 15 minutes as the number of seats was finalized in New Delhi during talks between Congress leaders and DMK’s Kanimozhi, who was not present at the formal signing of agreement. Asked about the parties likely to align with the DMK, Stalin said those that had been with the DMK in the last two years will be in it. “There are friendly parties which have been with the DMK during all its protests in the past two years. Talks will begin on Thursday,” he said.Describing the alliance with the Congress as transparent unlike the AIADMK alliance with the PMK and the BJP, Stalin said, “Our agreement was signed in front of the media … we are not secretive like the AIADMK”.On the byelections to 21 assembly constituencies in the state, Stalin said, “Once the dates for the byelections are announced, we will consult our alliance partners and decide.”Venugopal said, “We are satisfied with the seat-sharing agreement and we will identify the constituencies soon.”He said the mood of the people in the country was against the Narendra Modi government and the Congress-DMK alliance was a much-awaited one.
