How Kanimozhi made DMK-Cong talks smooth affair

  • | Thursday | 21st February, 2019

CHENNAI: Unlike the AIADMK-BJP alliance and seat sharing talks, it was rather a smooth affair for the DMK-Congress camp, which entered into an alliance agreement on Wednesday evening. "Once a broad understanding was arrived at, she next held two rounds of meetings with Congress president Rahul Gandhi, along with Chidambaram, and closed the deal. Once it was done, Congress general secretaries Mukul Wasnik and K C Venugopal arrived in Chennai, met Stalin and signed the agreement," a Congress leader said. Along with former Union minister and party senior T R Baalu, she held one round of discussion with state Congress leaders including P Chidambaram, TNCC president K S Alagiri and former TNCC presidents S Thirunavukkarasar and EVKS Elangovan. "While the BJP-AIADMK alliance is a forced marriage, the Congress-DMK alliance is akin to an arranged marriage between two known families and hence there were no hiccups," Thirunavukkarasar had said on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: Unlike the AIADMK-BJP alliance and seat sharing talks, it was rather a smooth affair for the DMK-Congress camp, which entered into an alliance agreement on Wednesday evening. While the AIADMK side had to pass through several hurdles, both internal and external, and held several secret and midnight meetings, in Chennai and in Delhi, the task was handled with ease by Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi singlehandedly for the DMK.As against the perceived differences and power centres within the DMK, party president M K Stalin chose Kanimozhi for deftly handling the Delhi affairs of the alliance politics. While Stalin himself had paved the way for a smooth ride, having become the first regional party leader to propose Congress president Rahul Gandhi for the Prime Minister's post, there were still hurdles to cross for Kanimozhi, especially given the groupism within the Congress. However, Kanimozhi handled it deftly and without making a fuss out of it, in just about a couple of meetings with Congress leaders in New Delhi. Along with former Union minister and party senior T R Baalu, she held one round of discussion with state Congress leaders including P Chidambaram, TNCC president K S Alagiri and former TNCC presidents S Thirunavukkarasar and EVKS Elangovan.
