Civic body chief to stop sewage entering Vaigai

MADURAI: Sewage treatment plants (STPs) will be established on the banks of the Vaigai river to treat sewage before it enters the river, said S Visakan who took charge as commissioner for Madurai city municipal corporation on Thursday.Untreated sewage entering the Vaigai has been a long pending problem faced by the corporation. Similarly, steps will be taken up to fulfil the basic amenities of the 28 wards annexed with the corporation in 2011,” Visakan said.He said the quality of education in schools run by Madurai Corporation would be improved. He said he would make sure the certificates are issued on a time-bound manner.“Drinking water shortage will be addressed by implementing the Mullaperiyar drinking water project by coordinating with various departments. The project would be rolled out in a phased manner, he said.He assured a fair and transparent administration. Tenders will be allotted to deserving contractors in a transparent manner.“Plastic ban will be effectively implemented throughout the city.

The civic body itself lets the sewage water into the river as the underground drainage work carried out with JNNURM funds is incomplete in many places.Visakan said the engineering department of the corporation was in the process of preparing a detailed project report to establish STPs. The project would be rolled out in a phased manner, he said.He assured a fair and transparent administration. “I will be receptive towards complaints and issues faced by the residents. Complaints will be solved on time bound basis,” he said.Approvals for various services like birth and death certificate and construction plans are being provided online. He said he would make sure the certificates are issued on a time-bound manner.“Drinking water shortage will be addressed by implementing the Mullaperiyar drinking water project by coordinating with various departments. Similarly, steps will be taken up to fulfil the basic amenities of the 28 wards annexed with the corporation in 2011,” Visakan said.He said the quality of education in schools run by Madurai Corporation would be improved. Visakan said he would make sure the projects under the Smart City Mission and funds under Amrut scheme are received at the earliest and projects are completed without delays. Tenders will be allotted to deserving contractors in a transparent manner.“Plastic ban will be effectively implemented throughout the city. Tax collection will be speeded up without any partiality between small and big commercial buildings. All the employee related issues would be heard, and necessary action will be taken,” he said.Visakan has replaced Aneesh Sekhar. He had earlier served as executive director for Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited. He served in the revenue department in various capacities. IAS was conferred on him in 2014. He is a BE (mechanical engineering) and MBA degrees holder.
