CHENNAI: Missing environmental activist R S Mugilan last updated his Facebook page at 12.03am on February 16. He was active on Facebook till 12.40am. His mobile was then turned off.As judicial and public pressure mounts to trace Mugilan, who was last seen at Egmore railway station on February 15, the CB-CID is looking to use the location where his mobile was last active to establish his whereabouts.Earlier in the day, he had held a press conference in Chennai and exhibited a documentary making serious allegations against top officers in connection with the police action against anti-Sterlite protesters.The CB-CID police have pasted posters at public places offering a reward for any information on Mugilan. Footage from CCTV cameras in Chennai shows that Mugilan went to meet a friend Sridhar from Alandur before reaching Chennai Egmore railway station with his friend Ponnarasan, who is also an activist. Mugilan helped Ponnarasan board a train and said he would board the unreserved compartment of Madurai Mahal Express parked on another platform. CCTV footage shows him leaving the station.Meanwhile, several of his associates have begun to question Mugilan’s actions. His close friend and co-activist Isai alias Rajeshwari told TOI, “I am waiting for his return to discuss many things, which has to be one-to-one. I’ve been surprised by some things I learned about Mugilan. I was trapped in his clutches for so many years.”Goundampalayam Rasappa Gounder Subramanian, coordinator of Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam and Cauvery Restoration forum, said: “Mugilan spoke in a language embarrassing to us at the protests. We stopped encouraging him.” Another activist from Trichy said, “Mugilan always projected himself as leader. He always dominated the protests by blaming some politicians.”Isai told TOI, “Mugilan often dictated questionable posts and messages to be uploaded through Facebook and WhatsApp and also to media friends.” There are questions aplenty, but any answers will only be forthcoming when the activist turns up, if at all.
